Parent teacher communication

Parents and community members play an important role in education and a strong partnership between parents and schools enriches the learning experience for students. Research shows that children do better in school when parents communicate regularly with teachers and become involved in the education of their children. There are a number of ways that parents can make contact with classroom teachers and be more involved with the school community.

Compass Parent Portal

Here at Benowa SHS we use Compass School Manager for our parent portal. Compass is the best way to access all the most up-to-date school information pertaining to your student, including:

  • Viewing up-to-date class and school attendance information
  • Viewing the school calendar
  • Approving or entering upcoming or past absences
  • Viewing your student's timetable
  • Viewing and contacting your student’s teachers
  • Accessing up-to-date news and information
  • And many more features are still being rolled out.
Compass is a web-based system that is accessible on any modern web browser  (Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer) or by using the Compass iOS or Android apps.
Upon acceptance of enrolment, you will be sent your log in information, including your unique Compass username and password. You can find some handy how reference documents on the right side of this page.

Teacher Contacts

Parents and caregivers can email the student’s teacher directly through Compass.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent-teacher nights are a formal opportunity to meet in person and have a conversation with each of your student's teachers. Interviews are an opportunity to find out about your student's progress both academically and socially, set future goals, discuss social aspects of school and put plans in place for continued success. Parent involvement in education is a powerful force and interviews are important for ALL children, regardless of their academic, extra-curricular or social achievements. Benowa State High School hosts parent-teacher nights in the middle of Term 2 and early in Term 3.

Reports on student performance

All schools are required to provide parents with a written report on their student's performance at least twice a year.  At Benowa State High School we provide two written report cards for each student and they are produced at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2.

Please note Year 12 students only receive one school report at the end of semester 1. Their final report is issued by the QCAA around mid December.
