Hospitality at Benowa State High School encourages students towards personal independence, living effectively in a wider society, and promoting preferred futures for self and other in contexts related to Food and Nutrition, Hospitality and Early Childhood Studies.
The Middle School
Middle School: Years 8 Food and Nutrition
Year 8 Food and Nutrition is a fun and practical six month course incorporating basic nutrition, cookery demonstrations and practical cooking classes. Students participate in practical cooking lessons each fortnight. Basic skills and knowledge for providing nutritious meals will be learnt.
Middle School: Year 9 Food and Nutrition
Food and Nutrition in Year 9 is a predominantly practical course aimed at improving essential life-skills for students. It is a course designed for students who enjoy food preparation, taste testing and extending students knowledge of food and nutrition. Students studying Food and Nutrition in Year 9 usually cook once a week, and are able to take their cooking home to share with their family.
The Transition Year to Senior Schooling: Year 10
Hospitality
Hospitality in Year 10 is a practical subject introducing students to the Hospitality Industry. It is designed for students looking towards a career in the exciting world of hospitality and tourism.
Students selecting this subject should have a strong interest in Food and Beverage service. They should be able to work cooperatively with others in group situations.
Learning experiences for students selecting this subject will include involvement in restaurant functions, coffee shops, small business ventures and work experience. Students will cook individually to extend their skills in food production and presentation.
Early Childhood Studies
The Year 10 Early Childhood Course is designed to offer students the opportunity to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills related to child development, parenting and childcare.
Students selecting this subject may have ambitions of careers in childcare or teaching.
Learning experiences for students selecting this subject will include visits to preschools, primary schools and childcare facilities to apply their knowledge and skills to real life situations.
The Senior School
Senior School: Hospitality
Hosptiality is a predominantly practical course which covers the most important aspects of professional food preparation and service within the Australian Hospitality Industry.
Students should possess
- a genuine interest in cooking and serving food
- an ability to work independently and within groups
- enthusiasm and willingness to participate in restaurants / functions
- an ability to adhere to workplace health and safety regulations and a desire to participate in work experience related to the hospitality industry-
Learning experiences for students involved in Hospitality would include involvement in restaurant functions, coffee shops, work experience and SeaWorlds Hospitality program.
Senior School: Early Childhood Studies
The Early Childhood Studies program is a course designed to offer students the opportunity to develop knowledge, attitudes and practices that support child development prior to compulsory schooling.
Students should possess
- An interest in young children
- An ability to communicate effectively with others
- Enthusiasm and willingness to participate in tasks independently and within groups
Learning experiences for students who complete this course include visits to preschools, primary school and childcare facilities. Guest speakers from hospitals and childcare facilities all form an integral part of developing students knowledge of child development.
